Indiana Bat The Indiana Bat has a weight of a quarter of an ounce. The height is from 1.2 to 2 inches tall. The bats are dying because of the white-nose syndrome. The population has dropped 50% of the past ten years. The color ranges from grey or black to chestnut. Also have a cinnamon belly. They live in eastern and western states and south of the United States. The average life span is about 5 to 9 years but sometimes up to 12. The population is estimated to be about 244,000. Since 1975 the population dropped 50%. About 23% hibernate in caves in the winter. The bats hunt at night for insects. A single colony of bats can consume thousand of pounds of bugs a night.
